Cairns Flashmob Freeze

I can't believe I haven't posted this already! Anyway, back in March my friend Arruna organized an event for the Cairns Flash Mob. We all froze in our local shopping center for 3 minutes, while the public had no idea what was going on. A few police officers and security guards turned up as well, but here's the video:

Why do I always forget to post stuff on here? Life has been so great lately ♥ We made this wonderful (poor) film for a local film competition about adrenaline sports. We had all these great ideas, and people to be in it, and knew exactly how we wanted it to go down, but at the last minute it all went to shit. My friend Ordie still turned up, and we went to the skate park, and when we got there.. we met this mental kid. Just, ahh.. just watch it:

So I'm fairly certain they won't even show it in the competition, but it's just hilarious entering, and imagining the judges faces while they're watching that. I wish I could film that.

Anyway, we filmed that last Thursday, and on Thursday night we all went out to this field next to the uni to shoot a video clip for local band Sevenskie's song. I really don't know when we're able to watch it, but I hope it's soon 'cause it was so much fun to shoot. Basically all we did was run into a fight pit and start jumping around and hitting people. We got really sweaty and messy, so we had a swim at my place when we got home, to cool down, then we sat up late and edited that video. Finished at around 4 in the morning, slept 2 hours, then I had to wake up for work. I felt so haggard, and almost fell asleep a few times. I apologize to my lovely friends, who I woke up in the morning and told to leave. I get crazy mental without enough sleep. Sorry, I do love you all.

The weekend was a waste. Jake stayed over and we hired out 5 dvds, and stayed up far too late and ate large amounts of chocolate and gummy babies and drank a lot of OJ.

I want to make more films, it's so much fun. Jahl keeps saying he wants to be in one, but he lives so far away. Lochlan, you need to move to Cairns, I have a spare bed.

My whole street is having a garage sale very soon, how great will that be!? Oh man, I'm going to score so much sweet stuff, and finally have the chance to get rid of all my junk. If you want to buy some of my trash, I'll find out the date of the garage sale and post it on here.

I'm going to the movies tomorrow with this lad, and he seems nice. We're seeing Hot Tub Time Machine, so excited! I told him to postpone the date till Tuesday, 'cause it's Cheap Tuesday. He may think less of me already.

I'm in a really lovely mood. I bought Nowhere Boy today, and watched it as soon as I got home. It's beautiful, and amazing, and I love Aaron Johnson. He's a wonderful actor. I truly love that movie, and I'm so glad I don't regret buying it without seeing it first. I love The Beatles so incredibly much ♥

Mofo is having the Ska.B.Q this Sunday, so excited to see Jobstopper play! Their songs on their Myspace sound hella good. I'm going to buy a huge Hawaiian shirt and turn it into a dress, and wear that. It seems like it'd be good to dance in. This week seems like it's going to be real nice.

Oh yeah, and party at Sam's house tomorrow.

Today, Etsy got even better. They created this thing called 'Suggested Shops', which basically means they go through your favourites and bring up about 200 shops that they think you'd like. It's the best thing ever!

Anyway, I found this little shop via it, and I can't make up my mind of what to buy! I have to choose between these two gorgeous creations:

I don't know, I'm in an odd sort of mood. I feel like getting every movie I love and all the movies I want to see, and just sitting down in one of those awesome round cushion chairs-

-And just chilling out for however long it takes to get through all those movies.

But I also feel like camping, but I don't know anyone close by who has a car and who would want to go camping. I really just feel like sleeping in my swag, with the smell of the fire and the coldness that has suddenly appeared in the Cairns night.

I seem to only work on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays now, so every week I have this huge gap of 4 days empty, with nothing really to do except clean my house and waste my life.

It's Mother's Day today, and I bought her a book by her favourite author that I found in a second hand store, seeing as all the book stores in Cairns don't seem to stock Robert G Barrett. I also cooked her a mean breakfast, and my brother stole some roses from the neighbors' garden down the road, as is his weekly routine. To make this occasion special, he stole more than usual. Mum was impressed.

Anyway, weird moods aren't too good, seeing as they can change from a nice weird to an uncomfortable unwanted weird in a matter of minutes, and I think that just happened. I'm missing about three different people very badly right now, and all of them live over an hour away from me.

This is the message I received from my friend Kayla that forced me to go and check my letter box. Inside, I found two parcels and one letter addressed to me.

The letter was from the government ("Congratulations on your completion of grade 12, have you considered your options for university?") and the two parcels contained..

A) The first of my frankie subscriptions, that I'll be receiving upon my doorstep for the rest of the year, free of charge:

Oh, and I just wanted to share this photo! On Sunday I went up to Kuranda to visit my aunt, uncle and cousin, and we popped in to mother bear's friend's place to hang out, and she has this enormous dog (quite appropriately) named Bear. He's the sweetest thing in the world and loves a good head scratch, but smells like wet dog. Anyway, yeah. He's gigantic and fluffy, and makes their other dog Barney looks quite small and pathetic in comparison, but Barney makes up for Bear's lack of spasticity by being a mental little mutt. I love them both.

Last night was hectic, and I'll write it up when it's not 2:14 in the morning.

Last Friday was insane, to say the least.

8 - The number of buses we caught that day.
4 - The number of bands we saw live that night.
21 - The number of hours I went without sleep.
3 - The number of lollipops I consumed that night.
83 - The number of dollars I spent that day.

Went op shopping in the afternoon with Kylie and Sailor, and we checked out Kaotika and Crackerbox Palace.

At Crackerbox I saw the most amazing portrait of The Beatles in their Sargent Pepper uniforms, and I would have bought it right then and there, if it wasn't priced at $120. What a rip off. Then we made our way out to The Tanks to see if we could buy our tickets to Yves Klein Blue now, and come back later. We weren't allowed, so we went to The Medics gig and stayed just long enough to see Beware Wolf play, then it was time to leave for Yves Klein! They played such an amazing show, I can't believe how excellent they are live. We stuck around to meet them and get some stuff signed, but I was far too nervous to really say anything to Michael Tomlinson. I'm so disappointed with myself! Anyway, Kylie sticker slapped Michael with a Skeg sticker, and we got a photo of him holding up a card. I'll have to upload the video I took of it soon.

I'm crazy in love with that man, which I'm sure isn't normal.

Anyway, after that we ran to the bus stop and caught a bus back to The Medics gig, and caught the end of their show. Waited for everyone to pack up, hung around, organized a lift and went back to Will's place for some drinks. It was fun while it lasted, till he ordered us all to leave, probably 'cause we were so loud. Anyway, the rest of the night was crazy, but here it is in photo form:

Browsing through flickr, and stumbled across probably my favourite tattoo artist of all time; Gakkin. His work with flowers are some of the most beautiful things I've ever seen, and the colours are so amazing. I'd love to have my tattoo done by him.

He lives in Japan, but I've emailed him asking if he travels. A couple of his paintings have been inspired by Tropical North Queensland, so I'm hoping he's been to Cairns before, and wants to come back .. ? Hopefully. To get a Gakkin tattoo would be an absolute dream ♥

Today was so lovely, I could feel it first thing this morning. As soon as I got to the bus stop, I looked up and saw the bus pulling in. The bus driver was super nice, made a joke about pocketing my change (it's a joke if he says it with a smile and a laugh, right?) and told me to have a good day. Later on, he saw a lady running down her road towards the main road, waving her hands at the bus, and the bus driver saw so he pulled over to wait for her. It was so lovely, and put me in such a great mood, I love nice bus drivers. Work was really good, and I spent the afternoon talking to Naomi about good films and Etsy and weird stalker pedos and control Nazi's. Karen (the manager) said something like "Can you both clean up this counter a little bit? You're spreading stuff everywhere-" (we were pricing stock) "-Sorry I'm being such a counter Nazi.." and Naomi said "Well if she's a counter Nazi, I'm a freaking Jew." Hahahahaha I don't know if it was a 'You-had-to-be-there' kind of thing, or if it's 'cause it was the end of the day, but it was probably the most hilarious thing I've ever heard someone say at work.. Aside from Adrian talking to an 11 year old girl (who was wearing a Twilight shirt) about Edward and Jacob, then saying "Oh, I feel like a 15 year old girl again!" Haha! We have a fair few 'Why-the-heck-did-I-say-that!?!' moments, it's great.

After work I went to town to meet up with Kahl and Arruna, and we saw Kick-Ass, and it was great! Seriously, I really liked it. From the trailer it looked like a teen comedy, like Role Models or Hot Rod or something, but it was brutal and bloody, and there were so many head shots.

Plus, the lead guy was a super cutie, so even though I paid full price for a ticket (We all thought it was cheap Monday), I didn't complain, 'cause it was well worth it. I'd like to see it again when it comes out on dvd.

When I got home, I found another wonderful Etsy purchase waiting for me! It only cost me $5 something in total. I bought this cute little Dia de los Muertos themed hair bow, and it arrived with a whole extra packet of unexpected treats! I got a magnet, 2 little badges, a sticker and some cards for other Etsy shops, not to mention this rad Zombie Attack Warning postcard (which I will never actually send to anyone. It's mine forever). This day has been so wonderful, and this just topped it off. Thank you, Cute and Creepy!

I love dad jokes, I really do. Even though at the time I groan and usually say something along the lines of "oh, how could you!", secretly, deep down, I'm rubbing my hands together and savoring the sense of humor my dad (thinks he) has. This morning he dropped me off at the bus stop, and he shared with me, this little delight.

*Note, I didn't know he was telling a joke at the time. This is how the game is usually played.

"I ahh.. read an ad in the paper this morning. A guy is selling a budgie, "Cage and all, going cheep". "

"Was that a joke?"

*Dad chuckles to himself.

"Budgies don't even go 'cheep', they go 'scraww!' .. When did you make up this little joke?"

"When I was eating breakfast."

I also started tie-dying my shirt today. I did it black, but it turned out grey-purple 'cause I had already dyed another piece of clothing before it. Oh well, I'm sure the pink, green and blue dye I'll be using tomorrow will turn out better on it now. I'll have to take a photo of it, I love the patterns so much ♥

I'm glad the weather has started to cool down. Spending days outside is actually quite enjoyable now.

People will never cease to surprise me with their innovative ways of creating new art. This seems really risky, but has the potential to create some mind blowing paintings (paintings? I don't really know what you'd call them..), and these ones here just seem like the beginning of a wonderful portfolio, which I will definitely be following. The colours are so amazing! I wish I could create blends like that without fireworks.. I'm afraid I'll blow my arm off if I come within one meter of a box of fireworks..

I miss you so much. My heart aches to once again watch this amazing film. I want to see crazy Axl dance and party, Vera and her lovely moustache man, and that antelope costume. I miss the cinematography and the soundtrack. I miss the feeling of watching a really fantastic film. I think I've been letting myself go, artistically. I don't know what's happening to me, but I feel as though I've been giving up on my art, without me even knowing so. I feel as though no one wants to know me anymore. I feel bored and trapped. I feel as though I'm losing my money and not saving enough for university. I feel worthless and horrible and ugly, and I feel as though I don't have a single person in my life to tell me otherwise. I miss my best friend, and I miss my motivation to do things. I miss feeling happy with myself, and life, and where I'm going.

I really want to watch this movie soon.

Video Vision

I've always wished I had video cameras in my eyes, so I can record exactly what I see and show other people.. The way light shines off my hair and casts a rainbow spectrum through my vision, certain weird people I catch the bus with, random acts of humanity.. Now, the world is one step closer! I adore Etsy so much. It's an all day, every day, online market place with fantastic handmade treats and wonderful vintage clothes. I've bought so many things off there, and my latest indulgence is this beautiful 90's Roxy floral dress. For anyone who actually knows me, they'll know how stingy I can be with money, so $45 for this dress (inc. shipping) is a huge thing for me, but it is definitely worth it:

Astro Light

It's probably the most beautiful lamp I've ever seen in my life, and when it's turned on in the dark, it's so magical I can barely explain it. Drove down to Innisfail with mother bear today to check out the Feast of the Senses festival. Got to eat a lot of free fruit, and I got to see my beautiful friend Ellie, who I haven't seen for far too long. I also got to check out this adorable little antique shop, and I found this:

It was only $5 (it has a small crack on the side, very easily fixed) and I'm thinking I can put my bobby pins and hair bows into it! I also think I may have to re-paint the lid gold again.. I love it so much!

I tend to do this. Go for a while without blogging, but end up doing all this really awesome stuff. Well, on Friday night I went to the Angus and Julia Stone show at The Tanks with Kayla, and I was disappointed. They definitely weren't the people I expected them to be, and I was really let down. Plus this disgusting pair of drunk women were standing behind us, and kept yelling out the wrong lyrics, bumping into me and basically grinding my leg. It was sick, and I wanted to maul their faces, but the security guard was right in front of me. Plus, I'm about 164cms tall, so the chances of me coming out better off in a fight are about one in a million. I'm a hobbit. Despite this, they did play one of my favourite songs in the world, and I cried a little bit.

The support band Boy & Bear, on the other hand, were brilliant!

Seriously, I can't believe they aren't signed, they're fantastic. I bought one of their cds and got them to sign it, and they're such friendly, sociable, down-to-earth guys.

Oh yeah, and the lead singer, Dave Hosking, totally looks like Michael Tomlinson ♥ So I really hope they decide to come back to Cairns sometime soon.

Then on Saturday night, I went roller skating with Kayla, which was great! We both sucked at first, but after we asked the guy how we're supposed to stop, we gradually got better. I did stack it at one point though, but it was a pretty awesome combat army style roll, so I wasn't too fussed. Though I am now, seeing as the right side of my body is all blotchy bruised. But yeah, I'm going back in there tomorrow to buy some skates! So I can practice at home! Coz it costs $9 entry + $2 skate hire at that place, and I'm not that rich.

Such a nice weekend.

Kaleidoscope Eyes launch!

Tonight was the launch night of Kaleidoscope Eyes, my first solo exhibition! It was amazing, so many people turned up, and people that I wouldn't have thought. My nan even came down from Kuranda to be there, which was really lovely.. though I think she had a few drinks and kept telling me to show my teeth when I smiled haha crazy. Everyone loved the tree! I have to make some more leaves for people to write on coz they all got used in the first half an hour! Mrs. Williams was all chuffed, and wanted a photo so she could put it in the school newspaper.

And this is my amazing (and to a degree, embarrassing) family.

But yeah, Chris came up to me and said that my name was on the door at the Women in Song show in the next Tank, and that I could take three guests with me. We went up and watched acappella girl band Aluka sing a few songs. Jess McAvoy and Clare Bowditch were playing later, but that was after the interval. During the interval I went back to my exhibition and stood around talking with Kayla, Teneille, Robert and Will, while people from the concert filed through a had a peeksie. Heaps of people were taking photos of my work, which is probably something I should be cautious about, but it just made me really happy :) Also, I got flowers!

And that's about it! It was a really nice night, thank you to all my friends who came. You're all so amazing, and I love you deeply.

A few days ago I saw a flyer for this adrenaline film competition in Cairns and I really want to enter it. I told my friend Jahl (Skeg) about it and he's been helping me find some sweet inspiration, like this video. The concept and ideas and everything are just so mindblowingly brilliant. Oh yeah, and the first song is probably one of the best 60's songs ever ♥ I hope I can think of something even a fraction as cool as this video:

All I need now is a decent camera, some skaters of moderate or higher ability, and a really, really good idea. Anyone interested in being a part of it?

Back to the future!

I don't know what's happened to my mind lately, but I've fallen in love with bands like The Beatles, The Ramones and the Runaways. I watched The Beatles movie 'Help!' I hired out from the library yesterday, and it's fantastic. Sure, you don't know what's happening half the time, or why they're doing the things they are, but the script is so brilliant! Some of the things they say are just so.. they just seem beyond their time, and I wonder if people back then understood their humour. I've also developed a bit of a crush on the 60's version of George Harrison.. I know he's been dead for about 10 years, and that he started to resemble Jesus at some point in the 70's, but in the 60's he had this boyish charm that's kind of hard to resist:

Yeah, he's my favourite Beatle. Ringo Starr, despite having the best stage name ever, has a large and very distracting nose. John and Paul, well.. I dislike their taste in women.

So if you ever get the chance, hire out 'Help!' and rejoice the wonderful humour of The Beatles in the 60's ♥

Today was so wonderful, and with only four days to go till Kaleidoscope Eyes opens, I'm surprised I'm not as stressed as I thought I'd be/was last year when all my art for school was due. I had to go back into Fuji Reef Center this morning to get some more photos printed out, as well as get one re-printed as it came out horrible the first time around. While they were getting printed I went and checked out one of my favourite op shops. I ended up buying a cute doily (that I'll probably use as a spray-paint stencil) and this gorgeous old photo frame for only $2! I'm so amazed with it, it's so beautiful:

When I went to check if my photos were done, they were and they looked AWESOME. I'm so happy with how they turned out. They don't really look like art to me though, they just look like snapshots of my friends dressed up funny, and a nice reminder of a fun day. I really want to see how other people perceive it though, but I guess I'll have to wait till Saturday night. So I went into The Tanks to drop the prints off with Annaliese, and we sat down and semi-wrote up the artists statements.. Well, I talked gibberish and Annaliese put it into sentence form. After that she dropped me home, as the gallery assistants had to frame stuff up and etc, and said she'd pick me up at 4 so we could go back in to see how everything will be set out in the gallery space. I had to drop off my library books as well so I caught a bus to the Stratford library and hung out there for a bit with Angus, which was nice coz that kid always makes me laugh. PLUS I found The Beatles' movie 'HELP!' there, and that pretty much made my day. I have yet to watch it, but the plot line sounds pretty crazy:

At 4, Annaliese picked me up from the library so we could go back to my place and pick up the masks the Girl Guides made, and my two canvases. When we got back to The Tanks, all my work was set up around the gallery and it was just the most wonderful feeling, I really can't explain it. I can't wait till everything is hung up and the lighting is set up and all that. Anyway, now for the most awesome part of my day. The gallery assistant Kylie said she could give me a lift home coz she was going shopping at Redlynch Central, and so when we were walking to the parking lot, she led me to a car like this:

Well, her car was teal, but you get the idea. Anyway, I almost cried. It was probably the most beautiful car I'd ever been in, in my entire life. I loved it, from the no seat belts, to the fake tulips she had resting on the dashboard. I adored the crap out of that car, and the ride home was the best thing ever, I felt so damn cool. I do believe this could possibly be my dream car. I don't think I can fully illustrate how awesome this car was, but I might be able to get a picture of it on Thursday, so I'll post it on here if I succeed.

So now I'm sitting here, with paint on my hands and feeling very, very uninspired to continue working on my canvas works. I hope it rains, that always helps.

Of my canvas artworks, just letting you know in advance. Oh, and sorry also for the bad quality of this photograph of my newspaper article. My mum's friend called up and said the photo was lovely because I wasn't looking at the camera and it looked natural. Yes, it's natural to stand out in and stare into the glare of the sun in 32 degrees Celsius. I like the writing though, it's a lot less cheesy than I expected it to be. Using my quotes like that makes me seem sort of intelligent, even though these single sentences had to be extracted from a 10 minute phone interview of my rambling and stuttering bullshit. I can't talk about my artwork in simple man's terms, easy as that.

Regular holiday snaps get boring after the first two, so here are a few of my photos from when I was in Burnie. As you can see, the esplanade boardwalk makes for excellent bokeh shots of the city, and the creeks are a nice place to visit to think of new ideas.

I admit, I've been horribly slack in the past month. I've been spending too much time watching movies and playing School of Wizardry (which is totally ace by the way) that I've been neglecting things I've really needed to be doing instead. I should have been concentrating more on my artwork, and I've wasted a month and now it has all built up into one nice massive pile and I need to get it all done by the end of next week. Yeah, I'm stressing. Aside from now suffering from stress-related shit like bad skin, breathing problems and chest pains, I'm also considerably sleep-deprived. I need to get myself organised. But I've been pretty busy this past month, want to read about it? Sure you do.

In preparation for Kaleidoscope Eyes, I did a photo shoot in town last weekend. I never though that dressing up three 18+ boys in little kid cowboy costumes would warrant tourists wanting them in their holiday happy snaps, but apparently so. Though the weather was hot, sticky, and a bit of a bitch, the day was good and I got some great photos on my DSLR, as well as this:

Pretty much the most badass Polaroid in the history of history.

That night was Staples, a local zine exhibition.

I'm so glad my town had finally decided to grow an art scene and become interesting. Speaking of which, my friend recently got his t-shirt label up and running, complete with sweet designs and a swish website. Though I'm on the street team, I'm lousy and haven't posted a blog yet.. due purely to the fact that I can't find a good 'intro' photo of me for my first blog. I should probably work on that. Anyway, when I get paid next week I'll be using some of that money to buy my first Skeg shirt:

So there's less than 2 weeks to go, and I still have to much work to do. I won't have a life until after the 5th of March, and don't expect me to be 'all there' until after that date also. I'm so frazzled.

I Built A Colour Tube

Today I bought a DIY Kaleidoscope kit, just to see how it works. They're so incredibly simple to create, I'm sure I could construct ones out of toilet paper rolls.

I pulled the end bit off and looked through the Kaleidoscope the opposite way, and the eyehole made little circles everywhere.. which got me thinking, you could use another shape, like a heart or something, and make some really wonderful pictures. I will be testing this idea soon.

This is the message I received from my friend Kayla that forced me to go and check my letter box. Inside, I found two parcels and one letter addressed to me.

The letter was from the government ("Congratulations on your completion of grade 12, have you considered your options for university?") and the two parcels contained..
